Historical exploration of the Oshino Hakkai(Eight ponds) as a sacred place

This tour will take us to the Oshino Hakkai(Eight Ponds) which are part of periferal assets of the world heritage site of Mount Fuji. You can experience “Shojin Ryori(Buddhist vegetarian cuisine)” and “Zazen(Japanese seated meditation)” at the Toenji Temple. It has a deep connection to the “Motohachiko- sacred place” which Fujiko, who prospered in the late Edo period, considered as a place for a purification ceremony. We will learn the history and the faith of Mount Fuji and spend the time for looking yourself in the silence.

10:00 Depart from Hotel Kaneyamaen by bus

The bus will head to one of the eight ponds.

10:20 Arrive at “Deguchi” pond

“Deguchi” pond is the largest pond of the eight ponds and is located 15 to 20 minutes of walking away from the other seven ponds. We can enjoy the scenery in a serene atmosphere. It has been regarded as a holy site and Mt. Fuji worshippers purified themselves bathing in the pond before climbing Mt. Fuji. From this pond, we walk to the other seven ponds.

Oshino other seven ponds

Take a stroll through the quaint village located on the site of a sixth lake that dried up several centuries ago. The eight springs have been recognized as properties that are a part of the World Heritage site of Mt. Fuji. The water is subsoil water of Mt. Fuji, filtered by lava rocks for tens of years. Therefore, it is so clear and contains a lot of minerals.

Walking along the “Shinnasyo” river

We walk to Oshino Sengen Shrine along the river, enjoying cherry blossoms in spring and beautiful autumn foliage.

Shibokusa Sengen Shrine

Shibakusa Sengen Shrine was built in 807. It was designated as Important Cultural Properties by Oshino village. Large yew trees surround the shrine.

Toenji temple related to Oshino Hakkai was originally founded in 810.

12:00 “Shojin Ryori”, a Buddhist vegetarian cuisine at Toenji temple

Shojin Ryori refers to a Buddhist temple cuisine in Japan. Shojin Ryori is a style of vegetarian cooking originated from Buddhist temple that is based on the Buddhist principle of not taking lives. Characterized by simplicity and wholesomeness, Shojin Ryori aims to keep the body healthy and prepare the mind for spiritual training.

Practicing Seated Meditation or Copying the image of Buddha / About 20 minutes

“Zazen”, seated meditation, is the form of meditation at the very heart of Zen practice. Zazen is the study of the self. You can experience Zazen or “Shabutsu”, the art of tracing the picture of Buddha at Toenji temple.
